Slivers of Time is a new concept in recruitment that works for anyone with a few spare hours to sell to local employers. They have integrated Esendex’s SMS service with their online booking system to automate the process of matching those looking for work with organisations which have ‘bits of work’ available.
Slivers of Time is a government funded programme which helps people who can’t work regular hours to find work for the limited time they do have available, whilst working around other commitments. This offers people and employers the ultimate in ‘flexible working’.
Esendex’s SMS service is central to the booking process between ‘sellers’ (work seekers who want employment) with ‘buyers’ who are organisations that need ‘top up’ workers at irregular times.
The ‘seller’ receives an automated text which provides details of the work and they text back their confirmation. They then receive a further SMS with details of where to report. This makes SMS service reliability and the speed of message delivery of paramount importance. Tony Marven says:
“We easily integrated SMS with our own system, using Esendex’s SMS SDK which was very easy to work with. The service has proven to be extremely reliable; we haven’t encountered a single problem.”
SMS has made Slivers of Time logistically feasible as it’s crucial that workers can be contacted at extremely short notice - sometimes within an hour - something that can’t be achieved with other communication methods. And as the system of placing people in work is largely automated, it makes it commercially viable too.
Slivers of Time was launched in East London in 2006. Today, six further councils are trialling the service with plans to rollout countrywide throughout 2008. Tony Marven concludes:
